Recently received E-mail from Mail@fbi.gov saying they have logged my IP-Address at more than 30 illegal websites. They want me to contact them at what is the legitimate FBI phone number in Wash. Wondering if anyone else received a similar E-Mail.

I heard one of those FBI emails is a virus but the one I heard was the FBI trying to contact you about going to illegal sites. Same one? Either way, if the feds want to get in contact with you I am sure that they will knock your door in. I would say delete that email just to be safe.

Since I only use this computer for gambling I was a bit concerned. I hope it is just a virus. Thanks Fighting69th for the info.

Those fake FBI messages have a zip file attachment which contains the virus. Trust me, there is NO WAY any government agency has the resources or interest to just randomly track your internet activity.

And if for some reason you had done something that made a law enforcement agency suspicious, they would never announce their findings via an e-mail message

FYI -

That same virus comes in other messages with some other 'official sounding' subjects such as:
  • Your Password
  • You visit illegal websites
  • Registration Confirmation
  • SMTP mail failed
and if you are not interested in those , it also comes in this flavor:

  • Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie

Delete an emai like this without opening. If the FBI wants you, they'll see you in person.
